Ghana Culture Week
Taking Ghanaian culture to the world

Ghana Culture Week, Prague is an initiative of Accra Art Week which brings core elements of Ghanaian Culture as a showcase to audiences in the Czech Republic. Bringing Ghanaian Culture closer to audiences who may otherwise not have any access to it. From 6th-10th March, an array of events will showcase the vibrancy of Ghanaian culture, including an Independence Day celebration hosted by the Ghana Ambassador to the Czech Republic on 6th March in Prague. The maiden edition of Ghana Culture Week, mirrors Indelibl Art’s Accra Art Week which over the past 6 years has grown to become a living archive that documents Accra’s creative ecosystem. The firm developed a free google map which comprehensively lists all major cultural art institutions in Accra (Available via; https://accraartweek.org/discover/)

The highlight of the week-long event is arguably the Decoded art exhibition which features the works of Ghanaian-Canadian artist Yaw Tony and the former Noldor artist-in-residence Dela Quarshie. Decoded explores how cultural knowledge shapes the way we see and understand art. Each artwork carries meanings that operate on more than one level. Viewers can engage with the visible elements, bold colour, intricate pattern-making and striking compositions whilst also encountering references rooted in Ghanaian history, symbols and everyday life. These cultural codes add depth to the works and highlights how art can translate personal and cultural narratives into visual tapestries that resonate beyond borders.
The exhibition takes place at Galerie Millennium, a small family run gallery in the heart of Mala Strana in downtown Prague. Whilst the gallery is mainly known for representing Adolf Hoffmeister, a prominent leader of the Czech avant-garde movement, the gallery’s goal is to showcase the diversity of new talent from the Czecho-Slovakian art scene.

Some of the speakers partaking in the event both in-person and virtually include; Her Excellency Theresa Adjei-Mensah, Ambassador of Ghana to the Czech Republic, Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Ghana, Kafui Danku, curator of the Czech National Film Archive, Klara Trskova, CEO of Indelibl Arts and founder of Accra Art Week, Mr. Edwin Otta, Legendary filmmaker Mr. Nii Kwate Owoo among others.
Other events include film screenings in Prague, Brno and Olomouc. As well as a Solo Presentation by Yaw Tony of limited edition prints organised in partnership with the Grau Collectiv a Brno-based contemporary art collective in the city of Brno, Czech Republic.
